America’s Birthday Party (A Hallmark Fourth of July eCard) + My Process

Hi everyone! I’m back with a new animation that I can’t wait to tell you more about. If you follow me on Instagram, Tumblr, or Facebook, you might already have an idea of what this is.

Yes, this one’s about my latest US Independence Day eCard for Hallmark!

As with all my client work, I did some research and a fair bit of brainstorming to be able to come up with a creative solution that would both be fun as an eCard, and doable within the available timeframe.

To do this I listed down words and phrases that I felt were related to the theme of the eCard, as well as vague ideas I had during my research. (TIP: Don’t edit yourself when brainstorming! Even the silliest, weirdest ideas have the potential to be something useful later on. Plus, you’re the only one who will read your ideas anyway!)

My Process: Storyboard

Hallmark let me pick which of the two ideas I presented to them I wanted to work on, so here’s the storyboard of the concept I decided to go with (click to enlarge):

Backgrounds and Style Frames

Since there weren’t that many backgrounds and characters, I only made one color sketch and style frame for the eCard:

Plus points if you spotted the Committee of Five in the background when you first watched it!

Animation

Below are progress shots of the USA and Lady Liberty characters side-by-side with their final animation:

As always, I hope you enjoyed this behind-the-scenes peek at America’s Birthday Party!

I’m currently busy with a few more exciting projects which is why I haven’t been able to post as much here or even on my other social media accounts lately (to the solo artists and creatives who are able to juggle client work + personal work + blogging + social media…how do ya’ll do it?!).

‘Til next post!
